10 Ways to Cut Expenses

From useless phone services to vending machine drinks here are tips to reduce your spending while barely changing your routine.

If you're like me, you sometimes find yourself scratching your head over your monthly expenses. You tried being frugal, but somehow your finances are just not adding up the way they should. While this is not uncommon, it is avoidable.

Here are ten tips to alleviate some of the hassle of the monthly budget burden.

  1. Cut down on phone extras -- Cancel all of the extra phone services such as Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call-Forwarding, and Three-Way Calling. You can do the same with your cell phone (do you really need your unlimited text messaging plan?).
  2. Call 411 for free -- Typically phone companies will charge a fee for 411. Instead of paying for information, you can call free 411 services such as (800) FREE-411, or (800) GOOG-411.
  3. Pay in cash -- It's easy to pay for things with your credit or debit card. That's why retailers offer these payment options. Paying in cash makes you more aware of the money you are spending and typically you will spend less if you pay cash.
  4. Shop smarter - Select articles of clothing you can use to make multiple outfits, in versatile colors that are easy to mix and match. Don't get caught up in the most fashionable and trendy brand names (who looks at the tag in the back of your shirt anyway?). You can find similar styles at a much more affordable cost. Besides, they'll be out of style next season anyway.
  5. Take it easy - Your vehicle will burn less gas if you accelerate and brake gradually. Drive conservatively to conserve gas and save money.
  6. Compare health plans - Working couples can reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and premiums by carefully comparing the costs of the benefits offered by each employer to find the best deal.
  7. Get a break on car insurance for good behavior - Ask about discounts if you've gone a certain number of years without an accident or ticket. Ask about age discounts, too.
  8. Re-evaluate your cable package - Do you have time to watch those movie channels you're paying a premium price for? Switch to basic cable and save a bundle each month.
  9. Have fun staying home -- Going out every weekend can be costly. It can be annoying having to deal with crowds or loud music when you just want to relax with your family and friends. Have a pot-luck party or just hang out around the house and watch your basic cable.
  10. Keep your eyes open for new restaurants in town - They typically offer grand opening specials that can save you money when you want to go out to eat.
